Sample Event Agenda
-
Get to know Melissa and Doug (your facilitators), and introduce yourself to the group! We’ll also make sure everyone feels like they know what to expect and how to participate for the evening.
-
20 min Game with the Full Group
Example: ROCK, PAPER SCISSORS TOURNAMENT
Play “Rock, Paper, Scissors” in pairs. The loser stands behind the winner and follows them around, cheering and chanting for them to win at other bouts. If the winner loses, they and everybody behind them goes to stand behind and cheer for the new winner. Eventually everybody will be behind one person after the last round is won, and then the winner can take a victory lap!
-
25 min Game in Pairs
Example: CARTOGRAPHY
Cartography is like Curiosity turned sideways. One player gets to “sketch a map” of another person’s mind by identifying as many interesting landmarks as possible. Focus on the breadth of the landscape, not the depth of one feature. Then hand them the map and let them fill in more details to discover themselves more clearly or completely.
-
20 min Game in Triads
Example: DISTILLATION
A variant on the Empathy Game, this is designed to help participants get to the heart of what is most important to them about a topic.
-
25 min Game in Singles w/sharing
Example: POETRY CREATOR
Poetry Creator is individual writing and creative exploration like you’ve never encountered before. This fast and flowing exercise allows the brain to reach with writing and the creativity to flow with music and it all culminates in a piece of poetry that will bring your energy to life!
-
20 min Game in Singles/Pairs/Quads
Example: LOVE BLASTER
Love Blaster is an instant wonderment-and-joy-inducer, and a way to notice choice in your frame of awareness. It’s also fun to experience a different take on gossip - talking about what you appreciate about each other to each other!
-
Just what it sounds like!
-
(Optional - 1 Hour)
This is your time to simply…be human together.
No structure, no prompts, no games to follow, just an open invitation to mix, mingle, and continue any connections that sparked for you tonight. Maybe that looks like continuing a conversation that felt meaningful, introducing yourself to someone new, or just standing in a small circle and seeing where curiosity takes you.

Every month, we gather for connection, curiosity, and discovery through a mix of authentic relating games, improv-inspired activities, guided conversations, and playful social experiments.
Think of it as a cross between a meaningful conversation, a community gathering, and a playground for curious folks. Some activities are lighthearted and fun. Others invite reflection and deeper connection. No two events are exactly the same.
-
Not at all.
While we borrow some exercises from the world of improvisation, the goal isn't to be funny, perform, or put anyone on the spot. The activities are designed to help participants become more present, responsive, and connected to themselves and others.
If you've never taken an improv class, you're in excellent company.
-
Many of our participants identify as introverts. This was built with you in mind!
This event isn't about being the loudest person in the room. It's about being authentic. Some activities involve pairs, small groups, or whole-group interactions, but you're always encouraged to participate at a level that feels right for you.
In fact, some of the most meaningful moments often come from thoughtful observation, curiosity, and genuine listening.
-
Then you're probably doing it right.
Ordinarily Unusual is built around the idea that growth, connection, and discovery often live just beyond our comfort zones. That said, we believe there's a big difference between productive discomfort and feeling unsafe.
You'll never be forced to share more than you'd like, participate in an activity that doesn't feel right, or engage in physical contact without consent. You're always in charge of your own experience.
-
People who are curious.
Some come looking to meet new people. Some want deeper conversations. Some are seeking community. Some simply want a fun and meaningful way to spend an evening.
You might find artists, professionals, students, entrepreneurs, caregivers, teachers, retirees, and people who don't fit neatly into any category at all.
The common thread isn't age, profession, or background….
It's a willingness to show up with an open mind and wonder what might happen.
-
Just yourself.
Wear comfortable clothes, bring a willingness to be curious, and leave your expectations at the door. There's no homework, no performance, and no special skills required.
Everything you need for the evening is already coming with you.
